There’s a lot of buzz right now about socks. Yes, that’s right¡ªsocks.
Sure, the idea of wearing socks with heels isn’t exactly news, but the look has started taking a decidedly high-fashion twist of late, and some very stylish folks are catching on. Ralph Lauren sent models down the runway in high-heeled sandals and scrunched-up socks, street-style stars have pairing socks with designer pumps, andshoe icon Manolo Blahnik is even getting in on the look, teaming up with hosier Falke to create a collection of seriously charming socks.
“Socks connect your feet with the clothes you are wearing and can make a punctuating statement,” Blahnik said. “I have so many pairs in various colors and materials. Playing with patterns and textures is a lot of fun. And I love when women wear socks with high heels!”
Still nervous about trying the trend yourself? Here’s a quick primer on how to wear socks and heels with aplomb:
For a Day of Walking/Lunching/Brunching: Pair a short anklet in red, blue, green, or yellow with shoes in a contrasting color. Throw on a pair of boyfriend jeans, roll up the hems and you’re set!
For a Night Out: If you’re wearing a miniskirt or an LBD, try a printed sock or maybe one with a pom-pom to add some lightness.
For Work: Choose a simple-looking sock or match the tone of your shoe¡ªblack socks with black pumps or nude socks with nude pumps. The look should be sleek and seamless.
For any occasion, be sure to choose thin socks that will fit into your shoes¡ªit’s essential.
Not only are socks a playful way to navigate transitional seasons, they’re also a seriously affordable way to freshen up your footwear. (Plus, you can avoid those pesky new-shoe blisters.)
We were so inspired by Blahnik’s enthusiasm that we went to his New York City headquarters and made this happiness-inducing video with his lovely socks and shoes for you. Enjoy!
