Athletic apparel and equipment giant, Adidas Group announced a strategic partnership with Bluesign Technologies to further drive sustainable solutions in the Group¡¯s global supply chain. Thecompany has said it will only use Bluesign-approved chemicals throughout its supply chain in the future, in order to improve its sustainability. Bluesign Technologies works by assessing chemicals, checking for toxicity and environmental harm throughout the entire production process. Adidas said it will assess the amount of Bluesign-approved chemicals its suppliers currently use, starting with its strategic suppliers, and then set targets for suppliers to switch to using only these chemicals. Adidas will also train its suppliers and adapt its production processes to achieve this goal.
The Bluefinder database of Bluesign covers all phases of the production process in which the chemicals used from spinning to garment manufacturing. The worldwide suppliers of Adidas have the right to access to bluefinder. Adidas said that it was helpful for suppliers to make a more wise choice about the chemicals used in the products. The continuous improvement practice is perfect with the company¡¯s policy and improve its impact on the environment.
A series of measures which taken by Adidas aim to remove toxic chemicals from the products and the supply chain by 2020, which is a promise to Greenpeace.
In collaboration with Greenpeace’s Detox campaign, Adidas makes a goal to eliminate per-and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) and sets the key milestones to achieve the whole supply chain transparency.
As part of the agreement, Adidas will insure 99% of its products are PFC-free by 2017, and achieve full elimination by 2020. The company has also set great goals to achieve full supply-chain transparency by 2020. In line with the ‘Right-to-Know’ of local communities and the brand’s customers, Adidas will publish discharge data from 80% globally suppliers by mid-2016.
